What is compounding?

Compounding is the art and science of creating personalized medications. Compounded medications are “made from scratch”—individual raw ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the physician for the patient.

Why is it needed?

Compounding helps patients that manufacturers ignore.

Compounding pharmacists can create dosage strengths unavailable from manufacturers that are tailored to each patient’s needs.

Compounding makes medications appropriate for children.

Generic formulations are often too strong and cannot be adjusted for children. Compounded medications can be customized with appropriate dosage, form and flavoring for children.

Compounding has a variety of convenient medication forms.

To accommodate a patient’s lifestyle, it may be easier for patients to remember to apply a cream at bedtime when they already have a similar habit instead of asking them to remember to take a pill.

Compounding can work around allergies and sensitivities.

A compounding medication can be designed to eliminate allergens such as preservatives, food dyes, sweeteners and lactose found in many over-the-counter manufactured drugs.
